1920
Allerton Castle in North Yorkshire was cast as the central role of the haunted house by Director Vikram Bhatt for his supernatural thriller, 1920. The Indian horror film shot in the region in November 2007 after Screen Yorkshire brought Vikram and his production company ASA Films to Allerton Park and he immediately fell in love with the castle's gothic exterior. In an ambitious cross-continental set design, the interior of Allerton Park was recreated in a studio in Mumbai.
1920 tells the story of Arjun and his wife after they move to an isolated house in the wilderness. Tasked with pulling it down and building a hotel in its place, they are unaware of the terror about to befall them....until strange and inexplicable events begin occurring. Soon husband and wife turn on one another as the cursed house watches and begins to fill their minds with doubt.
1920 was the first Indian film that Screen Yorkshire brought to the region after it played host to the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA's) in June 2007. The twenty-two day shoot took place at several locations across the region, including Bolton Abbey, Bramham Park and Ripley Castle, as well as Allerton Park (pictured right).
Screen Yorkshire collaborated with Vikram and his team to source locations, crew and facilities and placed a number of trainees on the production. Leeds-based camera trainee Kuljinder Pal Rayit, who attended the premiere with his family last night, ended up getting a taste of life on the other side of the lens, when Vikram cast him in a small role as a priest in the film.
1920 stars Rajneesh Duggal, Adah Sharma, Anjori Alagh, Indraneil, Rajendra Zutshi.
The UK premiere of 1920 took place at the National Media Museum in Bradford as part of the Bite the Mango International Film Festival in September 2008. Click here to see pictures from the UK premiere, which was attended by director Vikram Bhatt.
