Transport & accommodation in the region
We want to make sure that everyone filming in the region has a positive experience while on location in Yorkshire. Yorkshire is the perfect location - we are easy to reach, have great services and extremely diverse locations. Our local authorities offer their full support to the film industry.
Yorkshire is extremely accessible from inside and outside the UK, served by excellent air, rail and sea links as well as motorway routes. Here is some useful information about coming to Yorkshire and the UK:
AIR: Leeds Bradford International and Humberside airports serve the Yorkshire & Humber region, providing daily flights to and from many destinations. With excellent transport links, Yorkshire is also easily accessible from Manchester International Airport, through high speed train links and an excellent motorway network.
TRAIN: An hourly high speed train service takes 2 hours from London to York or Leeds. To find out about rail links from London to York or Leeds, go www.gner.co.uk
SEA: The port in Hull (east coast) links the Yorkshire & Humber region to various European ports.
ROAD: Excellent motorway routes link Yorkshire to the rest of the UK. Cars are left hand drive in the UK and we drive on the left-hand side
TIME ZONES: The UK (United Kingdom) is in the Western European time zone. Western European Standard Time (WET) is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Like most states in Europe, the UK is on British summer time, which is one hour ahead of GMT.
CLIMATE: Britain's weather is varied - you sometimes can experience all four seasons in one day! Winters are usually quite mild with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing. January and February are usually the coldest months, when snow is not unusual in Yorkshire. In summer, temperatures have soared into the 80s and 90s in the last few years, although it is still more often likely to be around 70-75 degrees F.
CURRENCY: The pound sterling is the UK currency. There are no restrictions on the amount of money you can bring into Britain (in any currency or any form); however, only the pound sterling is valid for payment. The UK has not joined the common currency of Europe, the Euro.
ACCOMMODATION: There is a great range of accommodation available in Yorkshire, ranging from camping and caravan parks to guesthouses, hotels and self-catering cottages. Go to www.yorkshire.com for accommodation ideas.
Made in YorkshireRed Riding
Adapted by Toni Grisoni from David Peace's cult noir novels, the Red Riding trilogy (1974, 1980 and 1983) is an ambitious, dark, and thrilling trilogy of interlinking films set in the dark and paranoid world of 1970s and early 80s Yorkshire at the time of the Ripper murders.
The films feature an ensemble cast including Andrew Garfield (returning to C4 after his Bafta-winning performance in Boy A); Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings), Paddy Considine (Dead Man's Shoes, The Bourne Ultimatum), David Morrissey (The Other Boleyn Girl, Blackpool), and Mark Addy (The Full Monty).
Red Riding shot at various locations around West Yorkshire in 2008, including the Yorkshire Post building in Leeds, Seacroft Hospital, Cookridge Hospital, Armley prison, Brudenell Social Club, Bradford's Connaught Rooms, old Koh-I-Norr restaurant and the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield.
Screen Yorkshire invested in Red Riding through its Production Fund and provided crew and locations support during the shoot. Red Riding is a Channel 4 presentation in association with Screen Yorkshire, LipSync Post and Revolution Films. All three films were screened on Channel 4 and are now available to buy on DVD.
