LOCATION FOCUS - OAKWELL HALL, KIRKLEES
Oakwell Hall is a beautifully preserved Elizabethan manor house in the Kirklees district of West Yorkshire. Originally built in 1583, the hall is now open to the public as a museum, set out as it would have been in the 1690s when home to the Batt family. The interior offers a mixture of authentic and reproduction furnishings, providing a real insight into late 17th Century life.
As well as its historic appeal, Oakwell Hall has links to one of Yorkshire's famous literary families: Visiting in the 19th Century, Charlotte Brontë featured it as Fieldhead - the home of her heroine in Shirley and it was subsequently chosen as the location for a silent movie version of the same book in the 1920's. In 2008, its acquaintance to the Brontë family was renewed when it featured in the latest television adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights.
Set in 110 acres of parkland and extensive woodland, featuring delightful period and wildlife gardens, Oakwell Hall is situated close to motorway links and has proved to be a popular location for a range of film and TV production crews in recent years, some of which are listed below.
