GDC 09 Report

Hey up,

Well, I've finally recovered from jetlag and back preparing for the next big Game Republic event, which is the Student Showcase at Sheffield Hallam university on Tuesday 5th May.

As for GDC 2009, it was very successful for the companies that attended from Yorkshire. GR with the assistance of the UKTI helped more than half-a-dozen companies make it to the San Francisco event, and we also sponsored three companies - Just Add Water Ltd, Distinctive Developments and Kavcom to attend the "speed-dating" business meet-up Game Connection.

While publisher attendance was down (understandable in this economic climate yada yada yada) all our companies reported having successful meetings at GC, as well as at the main conference. Team 17's room just opposite ours was also doing brisk business, with a constant stream of people viewing the new Worms game and other exciting upcoming titles from deepest Ossett.

As well as the two business breakfasts with Apple and Nintendo (see previous post) I also had a chance to check out many sessions including Nintendo's Satoru Iwata keynote speech (and pick up my free copy of Rhythm Heaven on DS) and the insane-but-brilliant Keita Takahashi, creator of Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy.

Most of the Yorkshire crew had time to chill out too after the conference ended on Friday afternoon, heading for beers and dice games at a blues bar on Fisherman's Wharf. The next major event coming up is E3 in Los Angeles - as a journalist I had many a fantastic time of an evening at glamorous spots including the Sky Bar and the Saddle Ranch both on Sunset. I also managed to do some work occasionally...

After that it's Develop in Brighton, Game Horizon in Newcastle and onwards to Cologne and Lyon. If you have a games company in Yorkshire and would like to apply for match-funding to go to any international events, contact me for info.

Cheers!
