DS? aye…
I bought a Nintendo DSi on launch day – it’s a nifty bit of gaming kit, and even without shoving a DS cart in it, has oodles of things to waste a bit of time with, such as the two built-in cameras and the sound sampling shenanigans.
However, one thing I didn’t realise I’d miss so much until it was gone, was the GBA port. I have dozens of GBA carts – great games including Golden Sun, Super Mario World, F-Zero GP Legend, Wario Ware Twisted and more – but now if I want to play them, I have to lug along my clunky old silver DS (I stupidly “handed down” my lovely white DS Lite to my wife) or my super-rare NES-styled GBA Micro (me a fanboy? Naaaaaaaah…)
I was hoping that I’d eventually be able to replace my favourite GBA carts with downloads from the DSi store, but no announcement was forthcoming from Nintendo at E3 about having a Virtual Console for DS. Also, I’ve been a little underwhelmed so far by the DSi Ware offerings – sure the Art Style games are groovy, but a Mario clock and some magic trick apps? Where are the exclusive Mario/Zelda/Metroid et al offerings which is all DSi owners really want?
I’m hoping that Nintendo will support the DSi more going forward – there’s talk that the Zelda DS game Spirit Tracks will have DSi-only content, which can only be good news. I just hope that in a few years time, we don’t look back and see the DSi as just Nintendo daintily dipping its toes into digital distribution - a stop-gap to compete with iPhone and PSN store before the new Game Boy/DS iteration comes along.
