ARCHIVE FILM SHOWCASES YORKSHIRE'S CRICKET HERITAGE (21/07/2010)
Treasured cricket memories, both past and present, were shown on the big screen at Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground during last week's Australia v Pakistan Test Match. While the players battled it out at the crease, the films entertained the crowds between the action, offering clips of professional, amateur and street games taken from the vaults of the Yorkshire Film Archive. As part of their ‘Caught on Film' appeal, Yorkshire Film Archive and Screen Yorkshire are asking Yorkshire's cricket fans to dig deep and find - or film - their own cricket movies as part of the Yorkshire Cricket Mela. Yorkshire Film Archive is working in partnership with Screen Yorkshire to capture the spirit of cricket for future generations. Whether it's the old 16mm or 8mm film reels taken years ago and still sat on a shelf in the basement or attic, or much more recent footage filmed during the Cricket Mela - it's all part of Yorkshire's cricketing history. You can upload your films to the Cricket Mela Facebook site, and find out more about 'Caught on Film' here.
Sue Howard, Director of the Yorkshire Film Archive, said: "Whether it's family film of matches on the beach or in the street, the local cricket club or lazy weekends watching matches on the village green, it's all part of our cricketing history. So if you have any films, please do let us know, it would be fantastic to be able to show as many as possible during the Mela, and not only on the big Screen at Headingley -we'll also be creating an online channel where material can be uploaded and watched."
Sally Joynson, Chief Executive of Screen Yorkshire, said:
"Archive footage is an incredibly important part of the UK's heritage and one that is often undervalued. And in terms of heritage there are few things more important to Yorkshire than cricket! So this project is one Screen Yorkshire is incredibly proud to be involved with."
The project is supported by the UK Film Council's Digital Film Archive Fund.
