BIFA NOMINATION FOR LEEDS/IRAQI FILM 'SON OF BABYLON' (02/11/2010)

Son of Babylon has been nominated for the Raindance Award in the 2010 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) shortlist, which was announced on 1st November. The awards, which set out to celebrate merit and achievement in independently funded British filmmaking, will take place on Sunday 5th December at a ceremony in London hosted by actor James Nesbitt. Three more films made in Yorkshire are leading the way with nominations in several categories;The King's Speech, Four Lions and The Arbor.

Son of Babylon, directed by Mohamed Al-Daradji and produced by Human Film was supported by Screen Yorkshire's Production Fund. It has screened at film festivals across the globe this year to critical acclaim, picking up an impressive array of awards along the way, most recently taking Best FIlm at the Third Eye Asian Film Festival. Son of Babylon, which has also been selected as Iraq's official entry for the foreign language Oscar at the 2011 Academy Awards, has its hometown premiere in Leeds, where production company Human Film are based, at  Hyde Park Cinema this Friday, 5th November as part of Leeds International Film Festival 2010.

YORKSHIRE FILMS LEAD THE WAY WITH MULTIPLE NOMINATIONS

Three films made in Yorkshire have received nominations in several categories: Oscar-tipped period drama The King's Speech (filmed partly in Leeds and Bradford) is the early frontrunner, securing eight nominations. Chris Morris's terrorist satire Four Lions, which shot in Sheffield (home to production company Warp Films), has four, including a best director nod for the first time film-maker and a best actor nomination for star Riz Ahmed. Also in a strong position is docu-drama The Arbor, about the late Bradford playwright Andrea Dunbar. It has six nominations and leads the race in the documentary category. All three films were supported by Screen Yorkshire's production liaison team, which sources crew and locations and offers logisitical support to filmmakers shooting in the region.
