Digital Domesday project gets work for fifteen 18-24 year olds (23/05/2011)
Fifteen unemployed 18-24 year olds are now working across the media thanks to Screen Yorkshire. The 15 recruits are now working together to create short films and digital representations of Yorkshire’s cultural history as part of the Digital Domesday Project.
The project was initiated by New Deal of the Mind and funded by the Future Jobs Fund. New Deal of the Mind is a London based coalition of artists, entrepreneurs and opinion formers who recognise and promote the value of Britain’s creative talent through training schemes, funding bids and government lobbying. The Digital Domesday Project is country wide, involving 100 young people across the creative and media sectors.
Screen Yorkshire has secured work opportunities across Yorkshire’s media and cultural sector, in Leeds, York, Bradford, Sheffield and Huddersfield. Host companies include ITV Yorkshire, Impressions Gallery, Yorkshire Film Archive, Logistik, Showroom Workstation and others specialising in Dance, Animation, Community Radio, Production Accounting and Technical Training.
The recruits are currently collaborating on the following four areas for the Digitial Domesday Project:
Lifeforce Productions & Chapeltown – Exploring local residents’ oral histories of living in Chapeltown, focusing on the future of the area with through local creative initiatives and projects.
Association of Dance of the African Diaspora & Phoenix Dance Theatre – Looking at the history of Phoenix Dance Theatre, from its humble beginnings to firmly establish itself as one of the country’s leading forces in contemporary dance.
Showroom Workstation & Sheffield - Investigating the history of Sheffield’s Showroom Cinema, and exploring Sheffield’s contribution to Film and Cinema.
The Media Centre & Huddersfield - Covering the history of the Media Centre and its involvement in Huddersfield as a creative hub.
Each brief combines archive footage and materials with new oral history interviews and graphics, to create a digital snapshot of the subject matter. The films will be hosted on a website, featuring other interactive content related to each brief.
The project will conclude with a screening event in Leeds in July. The films and outcomes of the project will be shown, and it will also be a chance for industry professionals and interested individuals to meet and network.
