Screen Yorkshire funded short wins at Glimmer (17/10/2011)
Screen Yorkshire-funded short ‘Brotherhood’ has won Best Film at Glimmer - Hull International Short Film Festival. Directed by Matt Taabu, ‘Brotherhood’ won the award jointly with Hugo Speer's 'Mam'. Both short films were produced by Rob Speranza and co-produced by the South Yorkshire Filmmakers Network.
Here's what the Hull ISFF had to say about the films:
‘BROTHERHOOD’
Dir. Matt Taabu
The Jury said:
“An engaging and emotional film on all levels, with fantastic cinematography, script and acting, with a wonderful soundtrack that complimented the film.”
‘MAM’
Dir. Hugo Speer
The Jury said:
“A real and genuine film that was beautifully written, directed and shot. It had Truthful and strong performances, particularly from the main character. It is a film that will stay with you for a long time after viewing.”
Matt Taabu, the writer and director of "Brotherhood', said this upon hearing the news:
"This is a very nice surprise to win and very special as Yorkshire has been my home for a long time now. Thanks to the festival, the jury, to my producers, cast and crew for all the hard work put in to make it happen."
And Rob Speranza, Producer of both 'Brotherhood' and 'Mam', added this:
'To win not just one Best Film Award but two at the same festival! That's a first I think! I am very deeply honoured that the jury liked both films so much. Matt Taabu and I have been working together for many years now ('Brotherhood' is our third short together) and it is so satisfying when your hard work and collaboration come to be recognised - we thank the jury profusely! Hugo Speer's first short film 'Mam' came out beautifully, and I think all of us should be looking for big things from him and writer Vivienne Harvey in the next few years. Both directors are such pleasant, nice people too - it couldn't be a more deserved couple of awards. Thanks for making us stars in Yorkshire! Long live Glimmer!'.
'Brotherhood' will also be receiving an award this weekend at 'I've Seen Films' film festival in Milan, Italy - the short film festival directed by actor Rutger Hauer.
Screen Yorkshire and the UK Film Council funded 'Brotherhood' and Screen Yorkshire provided production support on 'Mam'.
These films are not available for online viewing, but can be available upon request to Rob Speranza on rob@syfn.org There will be a screening of 'Brotherhood' and other Screen Yorkshire digital short films in November in Sheffield, details forthcoming.
