TOP FILM AWARD DOWN UNDER FOR 'THREADS' (29/03/2011)

Short film 'Threads', Written and Directed by Matt Taabu and Produced by Rob Speranza and Alex Usborne on Screen Yorkshire's Digital Shorts programme, has won the Audience Choice Award at the Clare Valley Film Festival in Australia. Programmers said that they thought it was a 'fantastic film and a big hit' with the folk of South Australia'.

Threads tells the story of Liam Jones, a mixed-race fifteen-year-old, who comes face-to-face with Steve Barker, a man who he believes is his father. As he works to uncover further information about Steve, and begins to feel connected to him, he discovers that he is a political candidate for the Far-Right party. Liam must then make a tough decision for a young lad -- are his roots or his own individuality more important to him? Former Hollyoaks actor Jamie Lomas (who stars as gangster Warren in the soap) plays the role of Steve Barker with rising star Reece Noi (Silk, Waterloo Road, Emmerdale, Father & Son) starring as young Liam. jamie-lomasThreads has proved to be a cross-cultural hit, screening at a host of film festivals across the UK and globe since its international premiere at In the Palace in Balchik, Bulgaria in June 2010, including; I've Seen Films International Film Festial, Milan, Budapest International Short Film Festival, Saltaire Festival, East End Festival, Thess Film Festival, Short Film Corner - Cannes and Nozstock Film and Music Festival. The UK premiere of Threads took place at the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival in July 2010, where it screened in competition in The Short Film Award category.

Threads was produced on Screen Yorkshire's Digital Shorts programme, run in partnership with The UK Film Council. The scheme is aimed at developing the next generation of film writers, directors and producers in Yorkshire and Humber.
