West Yorkshire woman leads battle for Channel 4 campaign (17/10/2011)
A West Yorkshire woman is hoping to spearhead a new campaign to secure more opportunities in the workplace for young people.
Carys G. Dayne, from Shipley, is on the verge of being selected for a television campaign, backed by Channel 4. “Battlefront” follows young campaigners who want to make a difference in the world. One strand of the programme deals with youth unemployment – a problem facing more than five thousand 16-24 year olds across Bradford last year. (source: Labour Market Statistics 2010)
Carys has worked at Yorkshire Television and presented on local radio around Yorkshire and said: “I had many valuable work placement opportunities in school and college which really helped shape my career. But now, with jobs harder to find, these placements are much rarer.”
With more than a thousand 16-18 year olds in Bradford classed as NEETs (not in full time employment, education or training) Carys knows the scale of the problem facing young people in Bradford and across the country, saying: “Too many young people are falling through the cracks between school and work and we run the risk of them becoming society’s forgotten problem.” She added: “Battlefront gives young people a voice and their work in the past has made the country’s decision-makers sit-up and take notice.”
Carys now needs people to vote for her video on the Battlefront website in order to make it through to the next round of the selection process. You can watch the video and vote here: Battlefront
