What area of the media would you like to work in? Do you want to be a runner, researcher or a sound recordist? The list of careers available is endless and cover everything from artisitic to technical to administrative roles.
Getting a foot in the door requires determination, persistence, perserverance and a degree of luck and timing. Once you decide where your interest lies, you need to research what companies are out there and find out the people involved in the specific projects you want to be involved in. It's important to do your homework so that you can make a targeted approach that doesn't waste yours or potential employers time.
So how do you make an approach? Once you're armed with a list of who is out there and you know what you want to do, you then need to approach the relevant companies and send a CV and a covering letter.
Work experience is often the best way of getting a foot in the door, though be aware that competition is fierce and placements can be few and far between. You need to be realisitic about the skills you can offer an employer.

Game Republic Student ShowcaseThe Future Looks Bright For Yorkshire's Games Industry
The games industry in Yorkshire has a bright future according to representatives from the region's leading games companies who came together to judge the very first Game Republic Student Showcase in Bradford. Awards were made in categories for Technical Achievement, Game Art and Game Design at the event, which took place at The University of Bradford.The judging panel was also an indication of the region's strength as an established global industry hotspot, featuring; Andy Gray (Zoo Digital Publishing), Ian Bowden (Rockstar), Martyn Brown (Team 17), Toby Allen (Sumo Digital), Tim Wharton (Four Door Lemon), Ian Bowden and Alastair Dukes (Rockstar Leeds) and George Bray (MumboJumbo).
Tim Wharton, Director of Four Door Lemon, Bradford, says:
"The Game Republic showcase has been an excellent opportunity for companies such as mine to meet new talent on the leading games courses in Yorkshire and we've heard and seen some great new ideas. It's gives Yorkshire's games companies the chance to point students in the right direction so we can continue to be a leading region for computer games.".
