Kayleigh Platt, Production Office Runner

What was your path into Film and TV?

Whilst studying at Northern Film School, I was working on shorts and as dailies in my spare time. After graduating I started working as a junior post-producer. But after a short stint in post-production, I realised I wanted to work in production and decided to look for opportunities within the production office.

I got my first production trainee job on teen drama Zero Chill, which I applied for after spotting it being advertised on the Screen Yorkshire Bootcamp group.

What are some recent projects that you've worked on in Yorkshire?

I am lucky to have worked on only Yorkshire based productions so far. In the last year I have worked on The Syndicate Series 4, Anne Boleyn and have just started production on All Creatures Great and Small Series 2.

What is your career highlight?

One of my career highlights was being nominated for a producing award at Underwire Festival 2019. My graduate film Virginia went on to win five awards on its festival run, including the BFI Future Film lab award.

Do you have any advice for people starting out in the industry?

For anyone starting out I think the first challenge is getting that first contract and building contacts. I had to really persevere for the first year and a half after graduating university. Joining all the crew Facebook groups and picking up daily runner jobs is a really good way to network.

There are also some great schemes out there for trainees, such as Beyond Brontës here in Yorkshire and the ScreenSkills Trainee Finder.

Have you noticed any recent positive changes in the industry, specifically in the region?

It is nice to see the region getting busier. There’s a bustle of HETV and films happening at the moment.

Towards the end of last year, Netflix’s The Witcher shot some of the upcoming series 2 around North Yorkshire. It is exciting that we are attracting big budget as well as indie projects.

What do you love about working in Yorkshire?

Growing up in Yorkshire and then having lived in Paris for a little bit – you can’t beat the Northern Hospitality. I love working with local crew and of course we have some of the most amazing landscapes and architecture. Even as a local, I can see why more and more productions are choosing to film here.
