What was your path into film and TV?

I studied a BTEC in media studies. Followed by a short stint in radio. I then decided to follow up my studies with a secretarial course to increase my skill set. I applied for a secretary position in the Calendar newsroom of what was then Yorkshire television. It was decided I would more suited to the role of Gallery P.A, I trained in live tv output for local news and magazine shows. After a couple of years I then moved out of live and continued my training in all the other departments of the company, drama, light entertainment, factuals and children’s. I was a staff P.A until the birth of my daughter. After which I went freelance and focused mainly in TV drama.

What are some recent projects that you've worked on in Yorkshire?

I have recently worked on Kay Mellor’s latest instalment of The Syndicate (Series 4). I also worked on Gentleman Jack and I continually enjoy returning to my roots on Emmerdale as and when they occasionally need cover.

Tell us about any particular highlights and any notable challenges that you have overcome during your career in the industry?

Over the years I struggled with the role and questioned whether or not I was “right for the job!” You are a department of one a lot of the time and have to have complete trust in yourself. I’ve worked on fabulous projects and with wonderful people who I continue to learn from everyday. With every new production you face different challenges; be it working with various people and personalities; long shooting hours and sometimes an ever changing script, no day is ever the same. As long as I can walk away from a job knowing I gave it 100% I’m happy.

Hit BBC drama Gentleman Jack filmed across West Yorkshire.

What do you love about working in Yorkshire?

I’m a Yorkshire lass born and bred so whenever I get the chance to work at home it’s a double bonus. The range of locations we have available to us here in “God’s own country” are magnificent. It offers such a diverse landscape; the stunning vistas of the dales, be it for period or contemporary pieces or high end city life and suburbia.

Do you have any advice for people starting out in the industry?

Learn about every department not just your own; there a no silly questions. Take responsibility for your mistakes; learn from them and move on.

How do you think the production landscape has changed in the region over the past 5 years?

I think it is an exciting time for the region; productions are continually being made here and with the launch of more studio spaces on the horizon and more companies relocating here I think it will continue to grow.
