Bill Nighy & Gemma Arterton Voice ‘Stardog & Turbocat’

Screen Yorkshire is investing in family animation STARDOG & TURBOCAT, featuring the voices of Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy. Its first raft of pre-sales were announced at Cannes 2018, including Turkey (Filma), China (Vision), CIS (MVK) and South Korea and Vietnam (Yejilim).

The film is now fully financed and in production, with the financing agreed between Head Gear Films represented by Marlon Vogelgesang, Kaleidoscope Film Distribution (KFD), Screen Yorkshire’s Hugo Heppell and animation studio Red Star, helmed by Ben Smith and Jan Rogowski.

The feature follows loyal dog Buddy as he sets out to find his lost owner with vigilante super-cat Felix. On their madcap adventure they learn the true power of friendship and become the greatest superheroes ever unleashed – STARDOG AND TURBOCAT!

Golden Globe winner Nighy has most recently been seen in the acclaimed BBC series ORDEAL BY INNOCENCE and is well known for memorable leads in films as diverse as PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, LOVE ACTUALLY, ABOUT TIME, PAGE EIGHT, THEIR FINEST and SHAUN OF THE DEAD.  He is currently filming DETECTIVE PIKACHU alongside Ryan Reynolds.

Arterton meanwhile has recently completed Virginia Woolf biography VITA AND VIRGINIA and is currently filming drama MY ZOE alongside Julie Delpy and Richard Armitage.  Her past work includes PRINCE OF PERSIA:  THE SANDS OF TIME, CLASH OF THE TITANS, QUANTUM OF SOLACE and ST. TRINIANS.

STARDOG & TURBOCAT is being produced at Red Star in Sheffield, UK, and animation is led by Jerome Boutroux whose previous credits include EDGE OF TOMORROW, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and PADDINGTON.

KFD continues pre-sales at Cannes.  The company’s Spencer Pollard commented: “We are so pleased to be continuing our relationship with Head Gear and doing our first deal with Hugo and Screen Yorkshire.  Ben and the team at Red Star have created a fabulous script and first class animation and we look forward to showing more of the film to the market”.

Red Star’s Ben Smith added:  “We’re really excited to be bringing these incredible characters to audiences around the world, and we’re thrilled to have found such supportive and energetic partners as Kaleidoscope, Head Gear and Screen Yorkshire.”

Screen Yorkshire’s Hugo Heppell said “We have been looking for the right opportunity to work with both Red Star and Kaleidoscope for some time now and this is an ideal project to debut with. We are really excited by what we have seen so far and have no doubt that STARDOG AND TURBOCAT will put Red Star and Sheffield firmly on the global animation map.”

Red Star is a Sheffield based animation studio creating fantastic film content for 3D and 4D attractions in special venues such as theme parks and musuems; as well as kids’ TV and feature film productions.

Screen Yorkshire has invested in Stardog & Turbocat through its Yorkshire Content Fund. Since it launched the YCF in February 2012 Screen Yorkshire has invested in 40 film & TV projects, helping to make the region the fastest growing for film & TV in the UK.
