Screen Yorkshire Launches ScriptEd 3, Building on Two Years of Transformational Talent Development

Screen Yorkshire is open for applications for ScriptEd 3,  the latest edition of its Script Editor Programme, supporting under-represented editorial talent to navigate their way through the heart of storytelling.

Following two successful years of the programme, ScriptEd 3 builds on that momentum with a comedy-skewed focus, offering participants hands-on masterclasses, exclusive industry speakers, and bursary-supported shadow placements on comedy themed productions.

ScriptEd is open to individuals either living in, working in, or from West Yorkshire, with a passion and understanding for story, who come from an under-represented community within the industry.

New for This Year: Grin Up North Alumni Event

This year’s programme includes a brand new addition: an exclusive invite to the It’s Grin Up North alumni comedy networking event, taking place on the evening of the programme’s launch day. The addition gives participants a direct route into Yorkshire’s comedy networking community from day one.

ScriptEd 3 is delivered in association with It’s Grin Up North, Screen Yorkshire’s comedy programme, developed through the BBC Comedy Grant.

ScriptEd provides hands-on training, industry insight and shadowing opportunities to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to help pursue a career in Script Editing.

Who is ScriptEd for?

ScriptEd is developed for individuals with a passion and understanding for story who come from communities currently under-represented within the screen industries. The programme focuses on nurturing skills within West Yorkshire. Therefore, applicants must be from, work in, or live within the region.

Individuals may already be working in editorial, however this isn’t an essential requirement. We are keen to encourage applicants from other creative industries, such as theatre, and would like to hear from people who have had some experience in script work regardless of background. An interest in or experience of comedy, whether through writing, performing, or script editing, is a real advantage this year, though not essential.

We are interested in people’s approaches to ideas and will be assessing applications based on the creative task submitted as well as your experience.

Please note: applications are not open to students in full time education and applicants must be 18 or over.

When and how will ScriptEd be delivered?

Applications open to ScriptEd on 3rd August, 2026 and the programme starts on 28th September, 2026.

We are running the programme in two parts, with an intake of 8 gaining access to keynote workshops and industry seminars, running from 28th September, 2026  to 26th October, 2026.

Participants will then be offered a 2-week part-time work shadowing placement across October to December 2026.

All sessions will be via Screen Yorkshire and both in-person and virtual. 

Participants must commit to the full duration of this programme in order to be accepted onto the programme.

Course Delivery Details

ScriptEd starts Monday 28th September, 2026

  • In–person day – Monday 28th September, 2026 11am-4.30pm.  In-person workshop day in Leeds, with the full cohort, including an exclusive Q&A with BAFTA award-winning writer Alex Bruce and a professional script editor
  • Monday 28 September, 6.00pm–8.30pm, Leeds (venue TBC) –  Invite to the It’s Grin Up North alumni comedy networking event
  • Delivery workshop dates (timings will be a mixture of early evening and lunchtime, via Zoom 60-90 mins):
    • Monday 5th October- Fundamentals of Script Editing
    • Monday 12th October-Introduction to Final Draft
    • Monday 19th October– Comedy Masterclass
    • Monday 26th October-Story Lab Day. In-person day focused on story and character in a writer’s room scenario, led by a Story Editor. The session also supports participants to expand their knowledge of climate-focused comedy, with guest Matt Nida, OKRE’s Climate and Comedy Programme Manager
    • Monday 26th October ScriptEd finishes for the core cohort. Participants will go on into shadow placements across October, November and December 2026.

This programme is funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority. It’s Grin Up North, Screen Yorkshire’s comedy programme, was itself developed through a BBC Comedy Grant. Through ScriptEd, the training is to address the lack of diversity of script editors and challenge barriers around access, while helping to tackle the ongoing skills gap in the talent pipeline.

FAQs

How much experience do I need for ScriptEd?

The programme is aimed at those already operating in an editorial capacity, however applicants can be working in or outside of the screen industries. They might range from early career to emerging professionals who require access/want to pivot into script editing. We do not require you to have a certain number of credits, but you will need to demonstrate a solid understanding of the dynamics of storytelling. Applicants should identify as underrepresented and be either working, living or be based in West Yorkshire.

Will I get paid for ScriptEd?

Lunch and refreshments will be provided at in-person training sessions and we will reimburse reasonable costs to travel to these sessions. Participants will also receive a shadow placement bursary. Support with access costs will also be available.
Placements will be at various locations, and will be two weeks in duration. These will be hybrid, with a minimum of 2 days in-person with the production. Dates and timings of the placement will be agreed between the participant and production, with support from Screen Yorkshire.

How are applications reviewed?

Applications will be assessed by our Talent Development Team without any identifying information attached. Interviews will be carried out by the same team on 15th September via Zoom. We are looking for demonstrable understanding of story and a keen interest in editorial, and ideally comedy.

What is the goal of ScriptEd? Where will I be at the end?

Our training scheme works to address the lack of diversity by providing a network for the cohort as well as harnessing/developing their skills & boosting confidence to apply for and work in the role of a script editor. On completing the placement aspect of the programme, people will be added to the Screen Yorkshire crew database. All participants should gain the following: A deeper understanding of the script cycle in a professional setting within the screen industry; developed confidence and skills in script editing, and  insights into working directly with writers and in an editorial team; an increased network of contacts, potentially linking directly to employability.
