Screen Yorkshire’s Bootcamp scheme, supported by Creative Skillset’s Film Skills Fund is a 3 day intensive programme designed to support new entrants to make the leap from training to industry via a combination of classroom sessions and practical activities.

Aimed at expanding the region’s crew base, Screen Yorkshire’s Bootcamp was established in response to the increase in production in the region since the launch of its Yorkshire Content Fund in 2012. It offers participants a better knowledge of what it’s like to work in the film industry and how to break into it.

Participants are given a thorough grounding on the workings of each department via two days of classroom sessions with some of the most talented and experienced UK crew behind the likes of This is England, Utopia, The Danish Girl & Dad’s Army. A detailed CV and life skills workshop will offer hints, tips and insider info on career progression and development. The classroom based sessions will be followed by a mock recce and production meeting aimed at applying your knowledge into the planning of a major film shoot.

Bootcamp is aimed at participants who have a degree or other higher qualification in an industry-related subject but have yet to convert that learning into a career.  Applications are also welcome from individuals who did not study a film-related subject but who have a demonstrable desire to enter the industry.

Bootcamp 3.0 is specifically aimed at behind camera and technical roles in the film industry.  The scheme does not have the time, the scope or the remit to develop writers or actors.

You must currently live in Yorkshire and Humber, and have no more than six months experience in the industry.

Screen Yorkshire particularly welcomes applications from those who consider themselves to have a disability, or applicants with a BAME background. Screen Yorkshire’s Film Industry Bootcamp is supported by Creative Skillset’s Film Skills Fund, which is funded by the BFI with National Lottery funds, through the Skills Investment Fund.

Victoria Berry, former Bootcamp participant

‘’My knowledge and experience within the film and television sector was significantly enhanced. I gained a thorough insight into the responsibilities of different members of crew needed on a film set. Bootcamp increased my passion to work in media and introduced me to other talented crew.

The on set experience with ITV’s ‘Brief Encounters’ increased the credibility of my CV and supported me to get work on other productions, including Paddy Considine’s new film ‘Jouneyman’. Following this, I have worked at ITV and post production studios ‘The Other Planet’, and hopefully many other jobs to come…’’

Olivia Clarkson, former bootcamper says:

”The diverse speakers and fellow bootcamp attendees reminded me why I’m passionate about film and television – I felt more inspired in those two days than I had in the previous two years of my working life. It made me re-evaluate what was holding me back from entering the industry, and the tips and advice helped me feel more prepared to take a leap of faith.

I’ve had an amazing few months learning the role and getting stuck in on a feature film in Yorkshire. If I hadn’t attended the bootcamp I can guarantee that I would not have got calls about jobs – attending it put me back on the map as someone worth considering for roles and keen to learn.”

Whether your passion is props, make-up or VFX, let us help you make the leap into an exciting new career in the film industry!
