A feature documentary about one of the UK’s best loved indie bands and the people of their beloved home city of Sheffield, Pulp: A Film about Life, Death & Supermarkets. Giving a career best performance exclusive to the film, the band share their thoughts on fame, love, mortality – & car maintenance in the music doc directed by Florian Habicht and produced by Alex Boden for Pistachio Pictures. Creative England worked with the production to secure regional crew and locations.

Pulp: A Film about Life, Death & Supermarkets is backed by Screen Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Content Fund.

Synopsis

Sheffield, 1988, ‘The Day That Never Happened’. Following a disastrous farewell show in their hometown, PULP move to London in search of success. They find fame on the world stage in the 1990s with anthems including ‘Common People’ and ‘Disco 2000’. 25 years (and 10 million album sales) later, they return to Sheffield for their last UK concert: what could go wrong?

Director Florian Habicht (Love Story) weaves together the band’s personal offerings with dream-like specially staged tableaux featuring ordinary people recruited on the streets of Sheffield. Unveiling the deep affection that the inhabitants of Sheffield have for PULP, and the formative effect the town has had on the band’s music (and front-man Jarvis Cocker’s lyrics in particular) PULP: A film About Life, Death & Supermarkets is a music-film like no other – by turns funny, moving, life-affirming and (occasionally) bewildering.

Reviews

“As celebrated in Habicht’s warmly human documentary, Pulp has always been defiantly different. …The result is a beguiling celebration of humanity” Charles Grant, Variety SXSW review

“A handsome cinematic homage to a unique band, a proud city and the unifying power of pop music. The group’s comeback shows felt like a triumphant lap of honor, and Habicht’s film certainly captures that feeling.” Stephen Dalton, Hollywood Reporter

“A refreshing antidote to the typical rock doc. Its focus is as much on Sheffield itself as it is on Jarvis Cocker and Pulp.” Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent

“Displaying a warm affection toward the band and their hometown, the film is wonderfully nostalgic without being maudlin. Sharp, funny and interspersed with gorgeously captured live footage, “Pulp” is anything but common.” AUSTIN360.COM

Pulp is a smash. Pulp isn’t a concert film. It’s a love story.
